About the Workshop:

Presentation Abstract: Successful negotiation is a combination of preparation and skill. The focus of this workshop is to provide a basic understanding of the process of negotiation including planning and preparation. You will have the opportunity to apply the principles, try your negotiation skills, and evaluate what could have gone better through role-playing scenarios based on case studies. You will learn tips for clarifying other’s interests and generating options that can maximize resources.

A “hard-bargaining” or “positional” type of negotiation can permanently damage working relationships in the long term. Find out how a mutual gains approach can improve your projects.

  • Learn how to effectively prepare for a negotiation
  • Learn why mutual gains techniques are the best way to confront a problem
  • Use mutual gains techniques to understand interests and generate options
  • Learn how to use negotiation skills within the daily work environment with your project sponsors, team members, and stakeholders.

Speaker Biography:

Lois Heldenbrand

Lois Heldenbrand has worked for over 10 years in the strategic planning, business reengineering, and customer focus arenas both as a manager and as an internal consultant. She directed a Missouri state government customer focus/satisfaction initiative in collaboration with an oversight team made up of private and public sector executives. Lois also coordinated strategic planning as well as the senior leadership training and department-wide professional development programs.

Lois is a Certified Quality Manager (ASQ) and was certified as a Missouri Project Manager during her tenure in state government. She earned a certificate in Public Health Leadership; completed the Harvard Program on Negotiation for Senior Executives; and served for three years as an examiner and overseer for the Excellence in Missouri Foundation – Missouri Quality Award process. She currently serves as the Vice President of Programs for the PMI Mid-Missouri Chapter.

Lois is the founder and president of People Produce Results, LLC, a consulting business specializing in results orientation and change management through strategic planning, employee involvement systems, and targeted employee skill development. She is completing a PhD in Organization and Management with special interest in change management. Lois also holds a B.S. Ed in Marketing and an M.S. Ed in Guidance and Counseling.

Elaine Bode-Oliver

Elaine Bode-Oliver is a trainer, facilitator, and consultant, e.g. mandatory training for supervisors, emergency response competencies, management projects, and strategic planning.

She has served as chairperson of the State Training Advisory Council and president of the Central MO Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development. Currently, she is chairperson for the “Prevention & Community Preparedness” subcommittee for Avian and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness.

Elaine is a certified trainer for “Achieve Global,” “Myers-Briggs Type Indicator,” and “Put It In Writing.” She has been with Missouri state government (serving five different agencies) for 31 years, including 23 years as a professional staff trainer. Of these years, nine were spent as a supervisor of staff trainers, and one-and-a-half were spent as interim chief of staff training.

A highlight of her career was conducting management skills training in Gdansk, Poland for managers from Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Elaine also holds a B.S. Ed in English.
